Spearfishing New York. Striper stone shot

I had given up. 90 minutes in the water and I was thirsty, cold, I had a headache.

In at 5 30pm on a Saturday,it was raining. Less chances of weekend boat traffic stress.

The water was warm on the surface, 23 C, but it was much colder at the bottom.

This summer much less fish variety than previous years. 2025 has been stormy and colder than I remember years before.

I was hoping to see porgies, triggerfish and bluefish. But I could see were only the blackfish and some very large or very small striped bass here and there.

So I had given up. Another dive without fish on the stringer, and nothing memorable to film. I was dreaming of Mediterranean or Florida waters.

I took one last dip, in the rockiest part. large boulders by a drop off to a sandy bottom.

My favorite way to spearfish is not to lie still and wait for fish to come by.
I prefer to swim around, using large rocks for cover.

I started to ascend weaving in between rocks and crevices.
I saw a striped bass coming from the left side above me. I knew it looked the right size, between 28 to 31 inches.

I did not hesitate, it was my only chance. i snuck up upon the bass undetected. I pulled the trigger, the shaft and the fish disappeared in the murk.
No tension on the speargun line, limp. I guess I missed.

I pulled back the line and then I felt some weight and tension.

The fish was on the monofilament, the shaft went all the way through by the gill plate and exited from the skull. A stone shot. The striper was dead on the spot.

The people fishing at the tip caught nothing, but small fluke and a sea robin. I retrieved a bucktail/hook for one of the guys stuck at the bottom. Always good to prevent them from cutting and leaving fishing line for 500 years at the bottom.

The fish was 30.5 in / 77.5 cm. Perfect size. My main pneumatic speargun is 29 in long which helps evaluating the size of stripers in front of me. Fed the gulls with the guts and drove home.
