The water is finally clear, after a windy fall with swell and stormy seas.

The colder temperature got rid of algae and plankton that turn the water into a murky green in the summer.

But now so only a few blackfish are left. SOmetimes striped bass, but I have seen none.

The legal size blackfish are less and less. They tend to hide under rocks and in holes.

I prefer to go to the bottom, and sneak up from below. But this time of year I need to change ways.

A couple of weeks ago, I got in the water and I saw a seal looking at me. I had no camera ready and I was just trying to get past the surf break, so I have no documentation.

Monday I was in a hurry, I had stayed up late to meet work deadlines, and I had more in the morning.
I met up with @vitaliy_freediver do spearfish with him, 2 hours before high tide.
In the water the current was strong. My breath holding felt bad. Maybe the cold. Or driving one hour and going directly in the water. Some brisk walk, stretching, squats and push ups may help before entering the cold water.
The 5.5 mm wetsut was OK for 1 hour, but maybe next time I will take the 7 mm top.

Also switch the dyneema gloves for the neoprene.

I missed 2 blackfish, I shot from above, and i find it harder.
I was on the way out and on the last dip I sneaked upon a 16 inch from below. We were on the way out, so i did not even put it on the stringer, I left it on the speargun line.
Bad decision, as we got out on the rocks at high tide. I had the float line tangled with the speargun line around my thigh, with cold hands.

Always tidy up your lines, being lazy will cost you a hassle later.

The cold wind made my fingers feel cold, and it was hard to zip up my windbreaker. But next time i need to bring a PVC / PU rainjacket, a thermos of hot water.

Both Vitaliy and me got a blackfish, exactly the same size, 16 inches.
Not much else around. But in the end, people win trophys and prizes for big fish, but the smaller can be harder to get. Then I just get a couple of fish for eating, and for the experience in teh ocean.
