Built in 1916, the Kovilan Point Lighthouse still stands majestically at a height of 30 meters. Situated along the beautiful coastline of Karaitivu Island in northern Sri Lanka, it serves as a symbol of resilience and hope. The nearby building, constructed with coral stones, adds to the lighthouse’s historical charm and significance.
After spending a peaceful few hours near the lighthouse, we continued our journey. Passing through Karainagar, we noticed several abandoned houses, the reasons behind their emptiness remain a mystery to us. From there, we headed toward Kankesanthurai and then to the Kurikattuwan Jetty. Our next stop was to pay our respects at the Lt. Gen. Denzil Kobbekaduwa Monument. Lt. Gen. Denzil Kobbekaduwa was a highly respected military leader whose bravery and sacrifice for Sri Lanka will always be remembered. Tragically, he was assassinated along with nine other military officers in a landmine explosion on the island of Kayts. Honouring his memory was a deeply moving experience.
We then visited Iranamadu Lake, where we paused to refresh ourselves. Our journey continued to the Kokavil Army Memorial, a heartfelt tribute to the soldiers who gave their lives during the Battle of Kokavil in 1990. Standing there, I felt a deep sense of sorrow and gratitude for their sacrifices. I sincerely hope you’ll find time to visit these meaningful places and experience the powerful stories of courage and resilience they hold.
Greetings,
I am Dinesh
