“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar,
he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost” (John 19:30).
When Jesus spoke the words “It is finished,” He wasn’t sighing in defeat — He was proclaiming victory. The long story of redemption, whispered through prophets and promised through covenants, reached its climax in that single moment. Every shadow of the Old Testament sacrifice pointed to this hour. Every prophecy found its fulfillment. Every barrier between God and humanity was being torn down.
Jesus didn’t say, “I am finished.”
He said, “It is finished.”
The work was accomplished.
The mission was fulfilled.
The ransom was paid.
The rescue was now complete.
The Greek word Jesus used for it is finished—tetelestai—was the very word written across a paid bill: “Paid in full.” The debt of sin was fully paid, not partially or temporarily, but completely and forever. The Father’s purpose was fulfilled, and the Son’s obedience was perfect.
For us, this means we stand before God not as people trying to earn His love, but as those already accepted and embraced by it.
As Romans 5:1 declares, “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Because Jesus finished the work, we are justified—declared righteous—by faith, not by our own efforts. This peace with God is a gift, not something we earn. We can rest, knowing that our relationship with God is secure because of what Christ has done.
We don’t strive for forgiveness — we receive it. We don’t carry shame — we lay it down. We don’t fear death — we walk in resurrection hope.
Jesus Himself assures us in John 8:36, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” The freedom Jesus gives is complete and unbreakable. No chain of sin, guilt, or shame can hold us, for His finished work secures our liberty forever. We are truly free to live as God’s beloved children.
“It is finished” is the foundation of our worship.
It’s the reason we sing.
It’s the reason we can rest.
It’s the reason we can live with courage and joy.
Hebrews 10:14 reminds us, “For by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified.” Christ’s single sacrifice is sufficient for all time. We do not need to add to it or repeat it; we are made holy and complete in Him. His work is perfect and everlasting.
Today, let those words settle into your spirit.
Let them quiet your striving.
Let them remind you that Jesus has done everything necessary to bring you home.
Because “It is finished,” we can rest from our own works and trust in Christ’s perfect accomplishment. Our souls find true Sabbath in Him, no longer striving but resting in His grace.

2. Are there burdens or fears you need to lay down at the foot of the cross, trusting that “It is finished” truly means all is accomplished for you?
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:27). For the Lord hath said, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5). Rest in His promise, rejoice in His victory, and walk in newness of life, for “if the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).
Heavenly Father, thank You for finishing the work I could never complete. Thank You that I don’t have to earn Your love or forgiveness but can simply receive it because of what You have done. Help me to lay down my burdens, my fears, and my striving at Your feet. Teach me to rest in Your grace and to walk in the freedom You have purchased for me. Let Your words, “It is finished,” fill my heart with peace and hope today. I pray all of this in the perfect and powerful name of our precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
