"Scoff" is a Nirvana song with not so much of a story behind it. It was written in 1988, probably between the summer "Love Buzz" single sessions and the December "Bleach" sessions. The most remarkable fact about the song is that it was part of Nirvana's Doom Pop experiment. During the "Bleach" sessions, they wanted to record several songs in a full-step-down tuning to achieve some extra heaviness, tuned down the guitars but forgot that they already were in that tuning. So, they ended up two steps down. That was too heavy, the Doom Pop idea was abandoned, "Scoff" and other the songs were re-recorded. The only survivor of the experiment is "Blew", Nirvana kept the two-steps-down version and included it on "Bleach".

The first live performance of "Scoff" was in May 1989 in Auburn, the last one happened in July 1992 in Valencia.
