"Spank Thru" is an early Kurt's song, from pre-Nirvana years. It was written in 1985 and became a part of 1986 "Illiteracy Will Prevail" – a demo by Fecal Matter, Kurt's first band with Dale Crover on drums. Later, Kurt gave the tape to his acquaintance Novoselic and "Spank Thru" was the song that pushed Krist to start a band with that Cobain boi. Krist calls it "the first Nirvana song". This version appears on "Sliver: The Best of the Box" (2005).

In May 1987, the band then called Skid Row played and recorded "Spank Thru" during the radio session for KAOS, an Olympia station. On January 3, 1988 they (Ted Ed Fred now) recorded it again at Crover's house preparing to enter a studio soon.

In the end of January, the band made a demo at Reciprocal Studio in Seattle with Jack Endino, the so-called Dale demo. "Spank Thru" was on the tape, too.

The Dale demo opened the door for a proper release for Sub Pop. In summer 1988, Nirvana with Chad Channing on drums began to the record "Love Buzz" single. During the sessions, a new version of "Spank Thru" was recorded, with Endino on backing vocals. The band loved the version better than the one with Dale. In the same year, it was included to "Sub Pop 200" — a compilation by various artists to showcase the local scene, to unleash grunge upon the world. It was the third Nirvana song officially released, the "Love Buzz/Big Cheese" single was already out by the time. The "Sub Pop 200" version is the one I use in the video.

In October 1989, "Spank Thru" was recorded for the first Nirvana appearance in John Peel Show on BBC radio, London.

The first live performance was in March 1987. The last time Nirvana played "Spank Thru" during the (in)famous show in Buenos Aires in 1992. The song was a part of the punishment for the nasty audience, no big hits, taste some early stuff.
