I don't own any rights for the song or any part of it.
"Paper Cuts" is one of my Nirvana favorites. Written in 1988, it's based on a story happened in Aberdeen. There was a family who kept their kids in total isolation in a room with windows painted black, tortured them, the kids had to use newspapers as a toilet. Later, authorities took the kids away, and one of those kids used to hang out with Kurt's first local drug dealer. What a life it was in Aberdeen, those were the days!
Here, Kurt is singing from a locked kid perspective. In the pre-chorus enters mother which may be both the mother from the story and Kurt's own mom, Wendy.
"Paper Cuts" is a part of the so-called Dale demo – a demo tape recorded at Reciprocal Recordings in January 1988, with Dale Crover from Melvins on drums and Jack Endino as an engineer. It was one of three songs from the demo that ended up on "Bleach". The other two were "Floyd The Barber" and "Downer".
Later that day, Ted Ed Fred (the band's name back then) played in Tacoma, and "Paper Cuts" made it's stage debut.
In December that year, the band entered the same studio to record "Bleach". They tried to re-record "Paper Cuts" "Floyd the Barber" and "Downer" with their new drummer Chad Channing, but it didn't work, so they just remixed the Dale tracks for the album. Backing vocals were recorded and added to "Paper Cuts".
Unfortunately, "Paper Cuts" didn't last too long in Nirvana's live setlist. In October 1990, in the UK, it was performed for the last time.
Lyrics:
At my feeding time
She'd push food thru the door
I crawl towards the cracks of light
Sometimes I can't find my way
Newspapers spread around
Soaking all that they can
A cleaning is due again
A good hosing down
The lady whom I feel maternal love for
Can not look me in the eyes
But I see hers and they are blue
And they cock and twitch and masturbate
Why?
I said so.
I said so.
I said so.
Nirvana
Black windows of paint
I scratch with my nails
I see others just like me
Why do they not try to escape?
They bring out the older ones
They point at my way
They come with their flashing lights
And take my family away
And very later I have learned to
Accept some friends of ridicule
My whole existance is for your amusement
And that is why I'm here with you
To take
Me with
Your life
