Friday of the Third Week of Lent.
On this Friday in Lent, we pray the Sorrowful Mysteries. We walk with Jesus in His final hours, meditating on His Agony in the Garden, the Scourging at the Pillar, the Crowning with Thorns, the Carrying of the Cross, and His Crucifixion and Death. These mysteries reveal the depth of Christ's love for us, a love that endured immense suffering for our salvation.
📖 Gospel (Mark 12:28–34)
According to the Lectionary for March 13, 2026: “One of the scribes, when he came forward and heard them debating and saw how well he had answered them, asked him, ‘Which is the first of all the commandments?’ Jesus replied, ‘The first is this: ‘Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.’ The scribe said to him, ‘Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, ‘He is One and there is no other than he.’ And ‘to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself’ is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.’ And when Jesus saw that he had answered with understanding, he said to him, ‘You are not far from the kingdom of God.’”
🙏 Reflection:
Today’s Gospel presents the ultimate law: love of God and love of neighbor. The Sorrowful Mysteries are the perfect illustration of this law fulfilled. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus’ prayer, “Not what I will, but what you will,” shows His total love and surrender to the Father. Every subsequent moment of His Passion—the scourging, the crowning, the carrying of the cross—is a testament to His infinite love for humanity, His neighbors. He didn't just teach the greatest commandment; He lived it to its most painful and beautiful conclusion on the Cross. As we pray today, let us see in Christ’s suffering the true meaning of love and ask for the grace to love God and our neighbor with a more generous and sacrificial heart.
