Southwest Research Institute is evaluating sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), including one developed in-house. It’s part of an internal research and development project funded by SwRI. Using a custom jet-engine test stand, researchers are gathering emissions and performance data to compare SAFs with conventional jet fuel.
Aviation contributes significantly to global carbon emissions, making them a prime target for reductions, particularly through sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). However, more data is needed to characterize pollutant emissions from SAF-powered aerospace engines, particularly concerning soot morphology, composition and particle formation.
