Engineers at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) are exploring battery immersion cooling technology to better manage heat and thermal runaway in lithium-ion battery systems. Heat in a single battery cell can spread to an entire pack, posing fire and safety risks in EVs and consumer electronics. Immersion cooling works by submerging battery cells and packs into a thermally conductive dielectric fluid, which dissipates heat more efficiently than air-cooled systems. SwRI has developed several battery immersion cooling test stands to help clients research and test immersion cooling fluids and battery systems to help industry develop safe and reliable solutions.
