Wow, that’s about as bad as being asked why you do not say that you love her enough.

So what do I say?

Admitting that you love her because she’s willing to give you both dinner and dessert is a dangerous proposition.

I have trouble thinking of a lot of reasons why I love her. It is not like a checklist.

That’s what half the stuff in women’s magazines are – check lists for life milestones, does he love you, how is your sex life against our idealized set of standards.

I’m afraid I won’t live up to a set of idealized standards.

Maybe she’s insecure and feels like you are growing distant, so she’s asking why you love her so she can see how she measures up to yours standards.

She puts up with me even after I relaxed my standards. That seems good enough for me.

Tolerance is not acceptance, much less love. Tolerance is just putting up with someone.

She’s my girlfriend, not the roommate I need to make rent this month who I’d otherwise want to kill.

This sort of question is totally reasonable if you’re just roommates with benefits, where she thinks you live with her to get sex and rent, but have no other emotional connection.

I do not want to get into a checklist of why I like her and then hate how she describes other people who meet the criteria I give.

This sort of question can be the result of insecurity on her part because someone she knew broke up or a response to falling out of the puppy love stage but not realizing things are maturing.

Maturing? I wonder if she’s expecting me to propose.

A lot of single women want you to propose, and a question like this might be the precursor. If you give all the reasons why you love her that are not utterly shallow, then she may up the ante and ask you to prove it.

If I say I love her because she’s funny, she’ll bring up George Carlin or Carrot Top, if I say it is because she’s pretty, she’ll freak out if Miss America comes on in the background, and if I say it is because she puts up with the real me, then what?

I would not be too concerned unless she starts playing Beyonce’s if you want it then you should have put a ring on it.
