That is all too often the start of a break up.

Why else would she ask for a break?

She wants permission to take a break and see someone else on the side without officially cheating on you.

I do not think she’s seeing someone else. Even if she was, I do not get why she’d ask for a break instead of a breakup.

Maybe she’ll snoop on you and see if you see someone else, using the break as a test of your relationship.

If she’s that paranoid, I’d be breaking up with her. And if we’re on a break, doesn’t that mean we could see other people?

That permission depends on her definition of on a break like a vacation or a break up that might result in getting back together in a few weeks. For all I know, she wants to go on a girls only vacation and have permission to flirt with the attendants.

If she wants to go on a girls only vacation, I have no problem with that. If she wants to play emotional games in order to go on the girls only vacation, I have a problem with that.

If she’s lying about what she’s doing during the breakup, I’d consider that a problem, too.

So what do I do?

A break up is like a divorce. It takes two to stay together and one to end it, and if she wants a break, you need to ask her about the terms.

I thought she was clear about wanting a break.

Ask her if this is like a two week vacation from each other where she has permission to flirt with the ski instructor, or the two month trial separation before a divorce.

So is a break officially a break up?

Some people ask for a break and then never call back, thinking it is less painful than saying I’m breaking up with you.

I have no idea where the dividing line between the two is.

Ask her how long she’s giving herself before she declares it a break up. It is not fair if she’s keeping you dangling, like she wants to test the waters but won’t let you go.

That makes sense.

You need to know how long you have to wait before you officially can go out and buy how to win back your ex books. Or how long you have before you can say this trial period has expired.
