Symmetry OCD - sometimes called “just right” OCD - isn’t really about neatness or perfection, it's about discomfort.
The intense internal tension that shows up when something feels uneven, misaligned, off-centre, or incomplete. And the powerful urge to fix it until it feels “right.”
The problem is that the relief never lasts.
In this Short, I explain why chasing the “just right” feeling actually strengthens OCD - and what helps instead. Recovery isn’t about making things perfectly aligned. It’s about learning to tolerate the discomfort without obeying it.
That means allowing something to stay slightly uneven.
Letting the tension rise.
And choosing not to correct it.
This is the core of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for symmetry OCD.
