Kings, queens, princes and princesses have often been highly skilled musicians, and even composers - Frederick the Great of Prussia being a good example. Another of the royal musicians is Pedro I, Emperor of Brazil. This hymn, with lyrics by Evaristo da Veiga, was composed in 1822 to commemorate Brazilian independence from Portugal, which was declared on the 7th of September and still celebrated today with pomp each year. I'm a little sad I missed it by less than a week, but there is a new chance next year, I guess. The arrangement follows the earliest known source from 1830, a version for a solo baritone voice and piano, with some alterations in the accompainment to make it fit the fife and drum format better. The drums are, as usual, my addition.
The image shows Pedro I declaring the Brazilian independence from Portugal in 1822, as painted by the French artist Francois-René Moreaux in 1844.
Enjoy!
