This is a tune I think you all know and recognize, and some of you probably love it as well. "Preussens Gloria" ("Prussia's Glory") seems to epitomize the essence of Prussian military music. However, composed in 1871 by Johann Gottfried Pfiefke, as a celebration of the newly proclaimed German Empire after its victory in the Franco-Prussian War, it was actually not as well-known and famous as one might think. It took until 1909 with a new arrangement by the German army musical inspector Theodor Grawert to introduce it to the broader public, but today it is played around the world.
In my arrangement, I stayed rather close to Grawert's version, but with a solo fife adding some embellishments in the trio. The drums and lower fifes are also reimagined by me, as I've had to make it fit with a small ensemble with a smaller sound.
The image shows the proclamation of the German Empire in the Mirrored Hall of Versailles in 1871. It was painted in 1885 by the German artist Anton von Werner.
Enjoy!
