This is a piece that many have requested - "Le Chant du Départ" ("the Song of Departure"), and so, I finally decided to make an arrangement. It is quite a typical tune for the French late 18th century, with its dramatic flare and temporary excursions to into the tonic's minor version. The drums and lower fifes have been devised by me, trying to capture the urgency of the military departure that it portrays. The melody and lyrics were written in 1794 by Étienne Méhul and Marie-Joseph Chénier respectively, during the French Wars of Revolution. It was still popular at the time of Napoleon and is used even today in the French army.
The image shows Napoleon Bonaparte inspecting troops at the Tuileries Palace in Paris in 1808. It was painted in 1838 by the French artist Horace Vernet.
Enjoy!
