14 September 2024, Wuhan. Still hot in September. After touring Wuhan University, I took my friend from Guangdong to Lingbomen—a perfect spot to see East Lake.

Lingbomen, a landmark by the lake.
Originally built in the 1950s as a swimming facility for Wuhan University, it’s been a beloved summer spot for over 60 years. Named after the nearby university gate, it holds generations of memories: graduation photos, first swims, first sunrises over the lake.
———
It just reopened after major renovation.
Closed in December 2023 for the East Lake Greenway Phase III project, the pier reopened on June 25, 2024—restored to its old self. The pier is wider now, but the familiar cement color remains. Sand was added to the lakebed, creating a small beach; new viewing steps offer a broader vista.
———
My Guangdong friend stood by the shore, watching swimmers:
“Wow, this is pure freedom.”
————
The lake was full of people that day.
Some diving off the pier, some swimming slowly, some lounging on paddleboards. Steps lined with onlookers—watching the water, the sky, the crowd. Life rings hung at the entrance; new stainless steel ladders made it easier for swimmers to climb ashore.
———
Lingbomen’s stories run deep.
Wuhan University chose Luojia Hill as its site in 1929; by the 1930s, a swimming area was built at the foot of Banbian Hill. Zhou Enlai, Chiang Kai‑shek, Zhang Xueliang—all once swam or strolled here. In 2011, students’ graduation photos “walking on water” made Lingbomen famous. The “Jump East Lake” event began here in 2010—young people biking and leaping into the lake, making Lingbomen a spiritual icon.
———
Where do we begin to understand a city?
With its lakeshore—the restored pier, swimmers in the water.
With its freedom—my friend’s exclamation, young jumpers’ arcs through the air.
With its everyday life—people on steps gazing out, parents and kids on the sand.
