Optical Illusion - Value Study - Adding Highlights on Permanent Marker

My entire intention for these videos are to act as a visual support towards experiencing and embracing the process of art. Trusting the process is one of the most valuable skills an artist can learn. Understanding that art takes time is another. That’s why the only editing that this project has gone through is to add music, insert the artist’s acknowledgements and notes along the way. I want those seeing this to know how much time this took without the timelapse.

Optical Illusion - Value Study - Adding Highlights on Permanent Marker

*If you’re in my class, PLEASE NOTE that we only use the permanent marker for lining the border, 7 connecting lines and the centermost alternated ring. This video will go over how the highlight is built up on permanent ink. There is a chance that it will look different on the washable black marker but please make sure you do the light, medium and heavy pressures as the video indicates for best results.*

In this video we’re working with value as an application of light bending around a curve. The curves made in the black checkerboard are what the light is going to be set around. It’s best to start applying a large middle space lightly, a medium middle space with medium pressure, and a small middle space with heavy pressure. Make sure that the black ink still has enough space on the sides to still be considered a value study.

Since it is a radial design, it’s also important to keep the highlights moving out from the center vertically. Coloring them horizontally will change what we’re seeing. Coloring in both directions will also make a similar change. To make this easy to see, I prefer working down each cone instead of spinning the page.

Variations can be made for this based on what the artist would like to apply. The Crayola colored pencils can be swapped out for chalk, or a better prismatic pencil that has more pigment than wax ratio. Paint can also be used but the idea here is to understand pencil pressure and how much is needed to create light, medium and dark applications whether they are for highlights or shadow.
