Coach John Shepherd continues his series looking at the various sprint drills he uses for various purposes in his sprint and long and triple jump training. "Number 4" follows on from "Number 3" and progresses speed development. Two drills are selected:
1: Low-high-run-sprint continuation
2: Off bend accelerations
Running at speed requires power and relaxation and the two drills identified will contribute to this.
The first works the hip region in particular (flexors and extensors). These muscles are crucial for fast and effective sprinting.
The second drill is a favourite also of Coach Shepherd - given especially that most of his athletes also do the long and triple jump where relaxed, technically proficient sprinting is a must - this involves running off a bend to continuously accelerate whilst working relaxed, yet powerful form.
