Here is a visual demonstration of how to tie off your embroidery thread when doing a linework or blackwork embroidery. The biggest tip I can give you is STOP STITCHING (hard as it is!) when you still have at least 1-2 inches of thread left. Otherwise, you won't have enough to tie a knot! Steps are as follows:
1) Bring your needle to the back of the hoop.
2) Thread the needle through some previous stitches.
3) Pull through, stopping to make a loop of thread.
4). Bring the needle back through the loop. Pull to make a knot. Repeat if you like to make a double knot.
5) Draw the thread through a couple more stitches to hold down the end of the thread.
6) Trim off excess thread.
