Here are my go-to stitches to use in linework or outline embroidery projects: Backstitch, Split Backstitch, Split Stitch, and Couching.
I'm of the mind that there is no "right way" to embroider, but knowing a few techniques can be useful if you want to have more control and precision with your lines.
Backstitch - for straight lines:
1) Bring your needle up at point A and down at point B to make a stitch.
2) Start your next stitch at point C.
3) Bring the needle back down through point A.
4) Repeat the pattern to create a series of backstitches.
Split Backstitch - for thicker, smoother lines:
1) Make a stitch and start the next as you would in backstitch.
2) Bring your needle down through the previous stitch.
3) Bring your needle up ahead of your last stitch, and down again through your previous stitch.
4). Repeat the pattern to create a series of split backstitches.
Split Stitch - for thicker, smoother lines:
1) Make a stitch
2) Bring your needle up through the middle of your previous stitch.
3) Bring your needle down ahead of your stitch.
4) Repeat the pattern to create a row of split stitches.
Couching - for giving stitches a small bend:
1) Make a stitch.
2) Bring your needle up next to your stitch at the point where you want a bend.
3) Bring your needle under your stitch and back down through the point where you want the bend.
4) Pull taught to create a slight bend in your stitch.
Don't get too caught up in your stitches looking perfect, and have fun!
