This tree’s story stretches back more than a hundred years to the mountains of Colorado. Three years ago it was collected by the legendary Randy Knight, and now it’s finally ready for its first styling here in the studio.
Rocky Mountain Junipers are notorious for their gnarled trunks and incredible deadwood. But the foliage is typically fine and leggy & the vascular tissue is delicate, so every bend, every cut, every piece of wire requires skill and precision.
In this video I take you through the process of carefully working this tree into its first bonsai form. It’s less about forcing a style with yamadori and more about revealing what’s hidden in the raw material.
