THOUGHTS
The Fantastic Four and Amazing Spider-Man continue to break new ground, spearheading Marvel's push toward innovative story-telling and character development. We witness the debut of the Inhumans race, hear their origin and visit the Great Refuge (FF 44-47). We also encounter the Negative Zone for the first time (FF 51). In addition, the Galactus Trilogy (FF 48-50) introduced Earth's greatest threat to date as a pure soap opera, on a cosmic scale, was born. Galactus and the Silver Surfer helped Marvel Comics reach the pinnacle of the Silver Age. In the Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker begins college at Empire University and we are introduced to mainstay characters such as Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn. The historically important, "If This Be My Destiny..!", arc begins (ASM 31-33) and Steve Ditko's art, featuring Spider-Man's escape under heavy machinery, became one of the most iconic sequences in comic history. Elsewhere, Eternity debuts in Strange Tales 138 and Happy Hogan learns Iron Man's true identity (ToS 70). Henry Pym (now known as Goliath) and Wasp rejoin the Avengers and we also see the debuts of the Swordsman (20) and Power Man (21). In Daredevil 13, we learn the origin of Ka-Zar and meet Tana Nile in Thor 129, which breaks free from its Journey Into Mystery title; this will be a continuing trend in the near future with the Tales of Suspense and Tales to Astonish lines. Finally, the debut of A.I.M (ToS 78) and the cosmic cube (79) grace the pages of Captain America's portion of Tales of Suspense. Marvel seems to be hitting its stride with creative stories and story arcs that lasted for several months, encouraging readers to purchase next month's comic to learn what happens after each cliffhanger--much to the chagrin of some kids who had to ask their parents for spare change to see the next story!
