What Sports Nutrition Ingredients Should Young Athletes Avoid? [3:48]
The first sports nutrition ingredient that high school athletes and college athletes should avoid is hormone modulators. DHEA, although it's a great ingredient, falls into this camp. It's sort of a pro-hormone that your body can use to convert into either testosterone or estrogen - and it may very well convert it to estrogen which if you're a male athlete you don't want that. At the same time, your body is already producing enough DHEA and androgynes on its own at this point in your life. The last thing you want is to add extra because your body won't produce as much of it.

Another sports nutrition ingredient you should avoid is SARMS or selective androgen receptor modulators. Not enough studies have been completed on SARMS yet, so we really don't know what the long-term ramifications are from taking products that contain them - or if there are any at all.

Other sports nutrition ingredients young men and women should avoid in their teens and 20's include caffeine and an overabundance of carbohydrates.

What Sports Nutrition Ingredients Should Young Athletes Be Taking? [11:38]
According to Professor Bruno, the use of creatine is completely acceptable. It's been around forever and is one of the single most well-researched nutraceuticals that exist in the dietary supplement industry. In fact, the International Society of Sports Nutrition or ISSN has indicated that it can be safely used as part of an exercise program for young athletes.

Another ingredient that both Bruno and Gillen recommend dietary supplement brand owners include in their sports nutrition product is protein, including whey, isolate, etc.. It's the fundamental building block of the body and the most prevalent substance after water. Young athletes require an adequate amount of protein in their diet to build and repair muscles.

Other ingredients that should be included in a well-formulated sports nutrition dietary supplement product include multivitamins, green superfoods, and adaptogens.
