To bring out the natural movement and flow of the trunk, I carefully carve and expand the shari little by little.
Rather than simply removing wood, I study the lines of the trunk and how the tree carries its strength, aiming to create a surface that looks as if it were shaped by nature over many years.
By finely adjusting the carving angles and depth, the trunk and the shari begin to merge into a single, continuous form, revealing the powerful character and three-dimensional presence unique to shimpaku juniper.
As the flow of the shari becomes clearer, the movement of the trunk stands out even more, and the overall presence of the tree grows stronger.
Taking time to appreciate each small change, I shape this shimpaku into a one-of-a-kind bonsai with its own expression.
