In this process, I carefully expand the shari to enhance and reveal the natural character of the trunk.
Rather than simply carving the wood, I study the flow and movement of the trunk, shaping the shari so it feels as if it was created naturally over many years.
By adjusting the depth and direction little by little, the connection between the living vein and the deadwood becomes clearer, bringing out the Shimpaku’s strength, tension, and elegance.
As the shari expands, the trunk’s movement becomes more expressive, and the overall presence of the bonsai grows stronger.
Every small cut adds depth and story to the tree.
