Many of us struggle to sit in one place. One reason for this because of discomfort in the body level as the joints in the body starts complaining. Another reason is the mind. Though the mind is within the body, it has habituated to wander out. The mind is compared to a dog - shunaka - always wandering. The mind should not be confused with the brain. The mind is also in the heart. Though the mind is very small compared to the size of the body, it is stronger than the body and it drags the body along.
This wandering mind makes the body restless. This discomfort is reflected through the mirror of the body and mind which is in the face. Our smile disappears, we start frowning, the worry lines in the forehead starts appearing.
The mind cannot be calmed through entertaining it outside by giving whatever it pleases. It is like pouring the ghee onto the fire and the more we pour stronger is the fire. We have seen how the great achievers fall for allowing the mind to have whatever it wanted.
We have seen many parents also talking that they never say no to their children and give whatever kids wanted. This is in a way we are letting the mind loose.
We all get great ideas in life but are not able to hang on to any idea as the mind is very turbulent. Most of our lives are filled with ideas in conceptual stages themselves without realising any of them.
The mind can be disciplined when it is made to realise that the mind is not independent. The mind has to be told that the intellect is the boss, and it has to listen to the boss. We cannot be called intelligent people just because we scored well in IQ or got into a prestigious university or made a lot of money. The individual intelligence has to abide by the rules of universal intelligence - The Supreme Indweller – Soul. The Supreme Indweller’s headquarter is in the heart. When we realise the boss is in the house, we do not dare to wander out carefree. The coronavirus lockdown has taught us that do not to venture out unless it is essential.
When the individual intelligence gets tuned to the Supreme intelligence from within, our mind gets scared to wander out and settles within.
Lord Shri Krishna beautifully explains this process of meditation as:
indriyāṇi parāṇyāhur indriyebhyaḥ paraṁ manaḥ
manasas tu parā buddhir yo buddheḥ paratas tu saḥ 3.42
The senses are superior to the gross body, and superior to the senses is the mind. Beyond the mind is the intellect, and even beyond the intellect is the soul.
Patanjali in yoga sutra says: Then one abides by own nature:
tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe avasthānam 1.3
When the mind is calm and serene, we can catch brilliant ideas and convert them into reality. Those who convert the concept into reality are called a realised people.
When our mind gets connected to its headquarter, the body also become calm and relaxed. By going within, the body and the mind are calmed and thereby our soul revels with Supreme Soul within. To enable this, every day gives a prime time to yourself.
Sit down in a firm posture (asana) in front of an altar. Have a smile, expect nothing, demand nothing, think good, think positive, do the japa on Lord’s name. Observe silence. Like when we approach an illumined soul, they bless us with positive energy, sitting in front of an alter every day, our outlook changes, we start radiating peace, joy and contentment. This is because of the Lord who is pouring an abundance of these from within which is also called mana prasada.
Bringing the individual soul to the Supreme Soul is Yoga. Brining the jiva to Paramatma is Yoga. Yoga is possible only through diving within and not by wandering out.
