The archaeological and iconographic record of Australia reveals a profound history of human adaptation, migration, and spiritual expression spanning over 75,000 years. Recent interdisciplinary research suggests that the initial peopling of Sahul occurred via northern and southern routes, with populations spreading rapidly along riverine corridors. Key archaeological sites, such as Lake Mungo, provide the world’s earliest evidence of ritual cremation, dating back approximately 42,000 years.Central to understanding the cognitive and spiritual world of these early inhabitants is the rock art of western Arnhem Land. The "Dynamic Figure" style, dated to roughly 10,000 years BP, offers an exceptionally well-preserved window into an archaic visionary world. This art is characterized by therianthropic (human-animal) beings and the use of "dashes" and "dots"—elements now interpreted as depictions of marr (intangible spiritual power) derived from Altered States of Consciousness (ASC). This visionary tradition demonstrates a remarkable 9,000-year continuity, evolving from early animal-headed beings into the complex "back-to-back" figures and Rainbow Serpent iconography that define contemporary Aboriginal systems of knowledge.
