Willem Jansz (c. 1570–c. 1630), a Dutch navigator for the Dutch East India Company (VOC), is the first European historically verified to have made landfall on the Australian continent. His initial landing occurred on February 26, 1606, on the western shore of the Cape York Peninsula. While Jansz remained unaware that he had discovered a new continent—believing instead that the land was an extension of New Guinea—his voyage produced the first verifiable chart of the Australian coastline.
Despite his successful navigation, Jansz’s reports were largely negative, describing the land as swampy and the indigenous population as hostile, which delayed European interest in the region for over 160 years. Jansz made a second verifiable landfall on the Western Australian coast in 1618. His career was marked by significant advancement within the VOC, eventually serving as an Admiral and a provincial Governor.
