Old Dale Road (to Brooklyn Mine Junction) - Joshua Tree National Park

This section of Old Dale Road starts in Joshua Tree National Park and ends at the Brooklyn Mine Junction. Between these two points, Old Dale Road is an easy dirt road with some washboarding and shallow sand. Most vehicles with AWD or 4x4Hi should have no problem getting to the Brooklyn Mine Junction. Two-wheel drive or low-clearance vehicles will get stuck in the sand.

About half a mile before the Junction, there is the Sunrise MIll, a cool historic site with some abandoned mining equipment and building-foundations.

Past Brooklyn Mine Junction, Old Dale Road becomes more difficult. As you climb into the Pinto Mountains, the road starts to get rocky and uneven. Low-clearance vehicles will start to have problems. Trucks and Jeeps should have no problem, standard SUVs and crossovers (Subaru's) will have to go very slow and possibly stack rocks to get over some obstacles. Unless you are prepared to possibly spend the night, standard SUVs and crossovers (Subaru's) should stay away from the second half of this trail.

A right turn at the junction will take you down Brooklyn Mine Jeep Trail, which is even harder than Old Dale Road. While most high clearance vehicles with 4x4Hi can make it to the first couple mines, only high-clearance, short-wheelbase, 4x4Lo with lockers vehicles should attempt the last part of the trail: a loop to the Brooklyn Mine.
