"You don't have to be crazy to drive this road, but it helps." 🏔️🚙
Welcome to Black Bear Pass (FSR 648), arguably the most famous and high-consequence off-road trail in the United States. Connecting the mining town of Ouray to the box canyon of Telluride, this trail is a masterclass in high-altitude scenery and "pucker-factor" shelf roads.
In this video, we tackle the legendary 12,840-foot summit, navigate the technical "Steps," and creep down the infamous one-way switchbacks that hang directly over the 365-foot Bridal Veil Falls.
📍 What You’ll See in This Video:
• The Ascent: Starting from Red Mountain Pass (Hwy 550) through the colorful volcanic tundra.
• The Summit: Standing at 12,840 feet with panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains.
• The Point of No Return: Entering the one-way section at Ingram Basin—once you start, there’s no turning back!
• The Steps: A technical, off-camber rock descent where tire placement is everything.
• The Switchbacks: Tight, multi-point turns with a 1,000-foot drop into Telluride.
• Historical Landmarks: The Black Bear Mine ruins and the iconic Bridal Veil Powerhouse.
⚠️ Trail Facts & Safety:
• Difficulty: Rated 6-7/10 (Difficult). Not for beginners or those with a fear of heights.
• Direction: Strictly ONE-WAY (downhill) from the Steps into Telluride.
• Vehicle Req: High-clearance 4WD required. Short wheelbase (Jeep Wrangler/Tacoma) is highly recommended for the tight turns.
• Season: Generally open late July to late September (weather permitting).
