In today’s plumbing video a customer has called me out to fit a new outside tap for them to be able to water there garden. To do so I’m going to have to drill a hole from outside to inside and and mount the wall plate on the wall to be able to screw in a nice new outside hose tap.
I started out by marking the position for my whole and the easiest way of doing this which I didn’t show in the video is to measure from the window so I measure from the outside edge of the pain of glass and then go horizontal and vertical and then match it on the inside and outside to avoid drilling in a place that you don’t want to tap. With my marking and my drilling I was only a few millimetres away so I’d like to say that it was pretty successful and if I got it wrong then I would’ve just drilled straight into the back end of the toilet.
I’m using a wall plate which has a female thread and a sold it piece of 15 mm copper pipe. I do feel that these are the best fixings that we have available especially in the UK but a big floor that they have is that the fixing holes are really close to the centre hole that you have to drill for the pipe and therefore in my opinion it’s hard to sleeve the pipework going through the wall as you have to drill a bigger diameter and risk not getting the right fixing for the wall plate and as you’re drilling into the front face of a house I feel that that is more important.
Once the wall plate is screwed up and your pipe is in it’s through the hole. I like to use some insulation tape around the pipe and this stops the copper from reacting with the cement and limestone in the wall as overtime this can corrode the pipe. There are many ways of installing the outside tap into a female thread and I’ve chosen to use some liquid thread locker as this gives the cleanest finish and you don’t even have to use a tool you can spin it until it’s tight Ish but in the right position, leave it for a bit of time and the liquid Goes nice and hard and gives a perfect Seal.
On the inside of the property I need to alter and pipework as the feed was being fed a toilet which needed removing and adapting so we could still supply the toilet and the new outside tap with a new shut off valve and checked valve. The toilet previously was used a flexible hose and I don’t mind flexible houses but when they’re on show I like to hard pipe the supply line in copper as I feel this gives the best product and service for the customer.
A quick test for leaks when turning the water back on and that is how I like to install my outside taps and using the wall plate and a threaded bib tap that allows maintenance super simple in the future so if you’d like today’s program it like drop a comment down below subscribe with you and I’ll see you on the next one.
