In today’s video I’ve been called out to customers house because the toilet doesn’t flush!
Inside the toilet is 2 key parts to be able to flush a toilet, the fill valve and the siphon. The fill valve filled the toilet tank with water and the siphon empties the water to be able to flush the stuff away.
In this job the siphon was faulty and normally inside them is a diaphragm washer and if it gets a tear or rip inside it won’t cause that siphonic action.
The toilet is a close coupled style toilet and to be able to remove that tank the cistern has to be removed but normally the bolts are rusty and they need cutting out! The fastest way I find to cut these out is by using a saver so you can either slice through the gap of the close couple plate or cut the actual wing that’s off sometimes if they get really hot then they do loosen you’re able to undo them here I just cut off and then I was able to snap it.
Once you have the system off onto the toilet, it’s time for a full strip down so you’re undoing the fill valve and a siphon to be able to remove them as well as giving a good cleanup and installing the new parts and what I like to do is use the rubber on the inside and then silicon on the underside Just filling the gap up and that should take up any imperfections that the ceramic has for the washer to seal.
Because the shape of this tank is a bit retro, the bottom comes inwards and the old siphon actually had a stem which brought it off the bottom to be able to fit and installing the new lever handled siphon. It closed up the whole way to Phil. I will go in so I couldn’t use this one. That is the reason why I went ahead with a push button style and luckily after cutting the old handle off the button covered over the hole nicely and the best thing about these style of siphon is you can either have a push button or a handle.
With the new parts installed can put the system back onto the toilet bolt down with the butterfly wing nuts and now it’s time to connect the tank up to the waterline . The pipework had an isolation valve which requires a flathead screwdriver and I normally like to remove these and fit a full. Bore isolation valve which has a handle so the customers are able to shut it down if an emergency. To connect up the copper line instead of using a Flexi I like to hard pipe it so I’ve decided to go with press in this instance cause it was a quicker job to get the job done. I’ve used a compression top connector with a rubber washer so now there is no fibre washer connected onto the toilet and hopefully this will last a lot longer.
As the toilet didn’t flush due to the siphon being faulty, I always find it’s cost-effective to change the Phil valve which is the reason why I did and also it gives the connection a brass thread for the top connected to go on so there’s no risk of cross spreading in the future although now that the new parts are installed, we don’t actually have to takeoff the system to repair it. They can just be serviced from above .
