The goal of these warm ups is to familiarize the students with their open strings, gain comfort starting and stopping the bow, and coordinate that bow use with the 1st and 2nd fingers. These warm ups were composed to be played sequentially but can be done out of order or with skips once students gain mastery of each exercise. The finger pattern is the same within each exercise, so after the exercise is mastered by everyone I will often just do 1-2 strings in each exercise.
Check it out in my TPT at this link: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/P...
Covered Topics:
Violin/Viola - Open strings, 1st and 2nd finger on every string, up & down bow, bow resets
Cello - Open strings, 1st and 3rd finger on every string, up & down bow, bow resets
Bass - Open strings, 1st and 4th finger on every string, up & down bow, bow resets
Also included:
D, G & A Major Pentatonic Scales (only uses first 2 tapes!)
Whole notes & half notes only
Advantages of this method:
Aids in memorization of open strings, 1st and 2nd finger notes.
Scaffolding built in to each exercise & between exercises.
Frequent tutti rests give time for teacher feedback/comment without pausing rehearsal.
The name Mosaic comes from the idea that each instrument family is working on a different concept (tessera) at any time but harmonically each family works together. Tesserae are collections of these individual parts that can be played on top of each other. In this warm up the differences between parts are minimal.
