Almudena Cathedral is the main Catholic cathedral of Madrid and stands directly opposite the Royal Palace of Madrid in the historic center of the city. Dedicated to the Virgin of Almudena, the patron saint of Madrid, it is one of the newest cathedrals in Europe.

Construction began in 1879 after Madrid became the capital of Spain and needed its own cathedral rather than relying on the archdiocese of Toledo Cathedral. Work progressed slowly due to political upheavals and financial difficulties, including interruptions during the Spanish Civil War. As a result, the building combines several architectural styles reflecting different periods of construction.

The exterior was designed in a neoclassical style to harmonize with the nearby royal palace, while the interior is neo-Gothic with modern decorative elements and brightly colored stained glass. Beneath the cathedral lies a large neo-Romanesque crypt with numerous chapels and columns.

The cathedral was finally completed and consecrated in 1993 by Pope John Paul II, the first Spanish cathedral to be consecrated by a pope. It gained international attention in 2004 when King Felipe VI married Queen Letizia there, making it an important religious and national landmark.
