This was my first attempt at the Glyn Johns method, one of which I am a big fan of for the Led Zeppelin records. I researched a lot about this before trying it, and one Creative Sound Lab video recommended lifting the side microphone over the drummers shoulder, as if its in line with the ride you don’t pick up the cymbal, but more of the air that moves when its struck (link here - • Glyn Johns Mic Technique - How To Avoid Th... ). This really opened the kit up, and kept the sustain of the cymbals.
I tried to keep the tuning as open as I could, allowing for the drums to ring and ‘blend’ together, allowing for the 3 microphones to form a cohesive drum sound. On reflection, a metal snare would have been more appropriate, paired with a classic Zeppelin groove. However I wanted to show that although there’s only 3 microphones, you can still get a lot of low end coming through if positioned and EQ’d in a certain way. The 3 microphones could have also been run through a compressor too, possibly the BuzzAudio Valve Optical compressor, adding more warmth and ‘glueing’ the drum mix together.
