First thing you can see is the tea towels on the toms, as the engineer/producer wanted a short thud, one that you feel rather than hear. Upon reflection it is audible that they weren’t as dead as they sounded when blended with the track and the tea towels didn’t provide as much dampening as we had expected from them. They weren’t tuned to pitches, however the distance between the two sounds like a fourth.
It was a typical mic set up for the kit, but in the background there were also 2 AKG 414s put int a figure of 8 and used as a room mic when processed later on.
Snare tuning was medium, with the brunt of it being done by the Big Fat Snare Drum and the loose-ness of the snare wires. The short sustain really carried with the track (that I can’t put on here!) but I would have liked to get the toms darker and shorten the decay.
