This kit was inspired by ambient, tight drum and bass drums with a short, snappy snare and a tom that was allowed to ring (but no overtones!). The snare was an integral part of the sound, utilising a single ply head allowed for a ‘snappier’ sound whilst retaining the qualities of coated. The coated head also warmed up the kit, as a clear head would have added more slap and taken up too much of the sonics the snare has. The tom tuning was done so that the pitch went down, adding interest to the tom and some movement as it was the only addition to the kit. I chose Zildjan K series cymbals for their dark dones and stick definition as the goal was a kit that was sonically interesting whilst cutting through.

The FET47 was used as a mono overhead, put through the distressor to add some extra ‘crunch’ and pick up on some of the cymbals harmonics. In the mix its not very high, however without it the drums seem more stable and less interesting. Placing it above the kit whilst keeping the kick and snare in line with it kept the kick together, as I took into consideration the mixing process how the snare and kick are usually panned centre. This leads to most of the tone being controlled together, leaving room for possible instrumentation around the sonic field.
