In this episode of ReviveMyRetro, I restore a non-working original Xbox I picked up at a flea market. At first it looked like the hard drive had completely failed, but the repair process uncovered several issues that needed attention.
To get the system running again, I installed an Aladdin modchip to bypass the original Xbox hard drive locking requirement. Interestingly, once the console was hard-modded, the original HDD started functioning again.
The next challenge was the Thomson DVD drive, which is well known for failing in these consoles. The drive would sometimes read discs and sometimes refuse to boot games.
To try and revive it I:
• Re-capped the Thomson DVD drive board
• Adjusted the laser potentiometer
• Cleaned and lubricated the drive rails and gears
Even after repairs the drive remained somewhat unreliable, so I upgraded the system with a 1TB Western Digital hard drive using an IDE-to-SATA adapter.
Using FATXplorer, I formatted the drive for the Xbox file system and installed the UnleashX dashboard, turning this once-dead console into a fully functional system capable of backing up games directly from discs.
While the Thomson drive is still a little flaky, this Xbox is now fully usable with a massive 1TB storage upgrade.
