Millions of soldiers came home from years away at war and happily resumed their lives. A lot of guys on caravans were able to sustain their relationships despite long times apart.

I am thinking more of the current day.

It is certainly possible to maintain a long distance relationship if you already knew each other. There are long, heart felt letters from every century where they grew more in love through the absence.

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, but if the other is away, the eye can wander.

Long distance relationships where you are already married can work when separated for months or even years unwillingly, like at war. They tend to fall apart if the other person seems to want to be away.

What about when you are getting to know the person?

Did you ever read the story about the several guys waiting at the airport, get to talking, only to discover they are waiting for the same woman? They'd all sent her money for the plane ticket, but she never arrived.

It was a scam.

A lot of foreign dating and mail order bride sites do the same thing. You meet the person, get to know each other, and the other person asks for money to come visit.

And now they have your money while staying in the other country. But surely there are success stories?

Those stories are usually people who already knew each other, even if not well. Then they grew closer through letters, phone calls and gifts.

You don't trust online dating, then.

I know eHarmony is responsible for a lot of marriages, more than Facebook is credited for breaking up. But online dating is easily a rip off, especially if long distance.

So I should only enter a long distance relationship if I already know the person and they leave.

Or if he's the only other person on the planet you find interested in some weird niche like collecting Vic 20 computers or meta-materials.
