We are on the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time; and in today’s Gospel, the Lord gives a parable about humility and hospitality. Where do you usually sit at a banquet?
Jesus tells us: Do not hastily take the seat of honor. Let the host lead you to it. “For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” And then the Lord teaches another lesson. Who do you invite to eat with you? Do we eat with family and friends only? How about “[inviting] the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind… For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” This is how we must prepare for the coming of the Lord. It is Lord, our host, who will seat us at our rightful place at his banquet. It is the Lord who will reward our hospitality to the poor.
