Today is the Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Gospel presents a lesson on discipleship. “If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple,” says Jesus. Hate one’s family—even one’s own life? Carry one’s cross? Oh, yes, these paths come from Jesus himself.
But how can we do it? First listen to Jesus and then prepare ourselves to meet his conditions. We can commit to being a disciple only when we discern what the Master we want to follow expects of us. If we make discipleship our own project only we might not be able to finish it.
