Keith has worked for fishery boards and trusts for over twenty years and is currently the director of both Kyle of Sutherland Fishery Board and Rivers Trust. His previous employment was as a biologist for the Ness & Beauly Fisheries Trust which followed a spell with Cromarty Firth DSFB.
Following the installation of hydro-electric dams on the Shin catchment, the number of salmon counted through the dams declined precipitously. By 2008 the five-year average was less than 50 salmon per year. Investigations identified that lack of downstream passage for smolts was the most likely cause of the decline. Trap and truck of smolts has been deployed to ensure smolts enter the River Shin below the dams. 2024 saw the highest number of smolts captured to date, over 12,000, and the highest salmon count at Shin Diversion Dam since 1962 with a total of over 550. Recovery has been uneven and to date has largely been driven by the River Fiag population. It is hoped that other rivers such as the Tirry will increasingly contribute to the total of smolts captured and released in the future.
