Brian joined the Ness DSFB as Director in 2022, following periods with the Spey DSFB and Ayrshire Rivers Trust. Despite surviving a lifetime misspent peering into water, the urge to do so remains undiminished.
In this presentation, Brian discusses the proliferation of pump storage hydro schemes being proposed and developed on Loch Ness in Scotland. While acknowledging the importance of these schemes for decarbonising the electricity grid, Brian raises concerns about the cumulative environmental impact of multiple large-scale projects on Loch Ness and the River Ness. Key biodiversity concerns include the effects on migrating salmon smolts, shoreline habitat, water temperature, and hydrology. The speaker argues that Loch Ness is too environmentally sensitive for such large-scale development and suggests that alternative, lower-impact locations and closed-loop designs should be considered instead. The presentation concludes with a call to balance the need for pump storage hydro with the conservation of biodiversity in iconic locations like Loch Ness.
