II. Schubertiade – a Family Celebration (2013)

This concert was a recreation of a “Schubertiade” – an event pioneered by the circle of Schubert’s friends, where amateur and professional musicians gathered at home to perform in a relaxed atmosphere of mutual love of music an of each other. In the early 1820ies, the middle class had widely become both a consumer and performer of music for intimate enjoyment – not for a royal or aristocratic salon or for the stage. This gave rise to the viability of a life of an independent composer of chamber music - just like Schubert who survived not by being a servant to an aristocrat, but through publishing his compositions for both amateur and professional performances.

Schubert/Liszt – “Standchen”, S560 (After Schubert, D. 957)

“Die Forelle” is one of Schubert's most popular songs (among more that 600) and the basis for another very popular work - the “Trout” piano quintet. Although on the surface it is a very happy and jaunty tune, it alludes to the tragedy of Schubert’s life – a youthful misadventure that led to him contracting the illness that killed him at the unthinkably young age of 31.
