All of Bach’s work elevates the music beyond the merely pleasant and enjoyable, yet some compositions express his spirituality with an extraordinary urgency and power. They depict a world where human frailty and suffering certainly exist, but so does the possibility of order, harmony, unutterable beauty & redemption. With enormous impact, they make us experience this beauty and summon us to rise to our best and realize this vision of perfection in our lives. This awesome and summoning quality of beauty is what the Greeks called “Eros” and what Edmund Burke called “the Sublime”. This program was an attempt to share a selection of such works.
