These final chapters of Deuteronomy form the conclusion of Moses' farewell addresses to Israel on the plains of Moab, just before they enter the Promised Land. They emphasize covenant renewal, the consequences of obedience or disobedience, the transition of leadership to Joshua, and Moses' farewell through song, blessing, and death.
Chapter 29: Renewal of the Covenant
Moses renews the covenant God made with Israel, distinct from the one at Horeb (Sinai). He recounts God's mighty acts: deliverance from Egypt, provision during the 40 years in the wilderness (clothes and sandals not wearing out, victories over Sihon and Og), and calls the entire assembly—leaders, families, and even foreigners—to enter into this sworn covenant. It binds present and future generations. Moses warns against idolatry and secret rebellion, stating that turning away from God will bring severe curses, making the land desolate like Sodom and Gomorrah. Hidden things belong to God, but revealed words are for obedience.
Chapter 30: Repentance and Restoration
Moses prophesies Israel's future: disobedience will lead to scattering and curse among the nations, but if they return to God with all their heart, He will restore them, circumcise their hearts for love and obedience, and bring prosperity. The command is not too hard or distant—it's near, in their mouth and heart. Moses urges them to choose life by loving God, obeying Him, and holding fast, for that brings blessing; choosing disobedience brings death and curse.
Chapter 31: Transition to Joshua and Preparation
At 120 years old, Moses announces he can no longer lead and that Joshua will succeed him, as God will go before them to conquer the land. He encourages Joshua and the people to be strong and courageous. Moses writes down the law, gives it to the Levites to place beside the ark, and commands public reading every seven years. God foretells Israel's future rebellion, commissioning Moses to write a song as a witness against them.
Chapter 32: The Song of Moses
Moses recites a lengthy song (the "Song of Moses") calling heaven and earth as witnesses. It praises God as the Rock—faithful, just, and perfect—contrasting His care for Israel (like an eagle over its young) with Israel's corruption and idolatry (sacrificing to demons). God will judge them with calamity but restrain full wrath to avoid enemy boasting, ultimately having compassion and vindicating His people. Moses urges the people to take the song to heart, then God instructs him to ascend Mount Nebo to view the land and die.
Chapter 33: Moses' Blessing of the Tribes
Before his death, Moses blesses the tribes of Israel individually (similar to Jacob's blessings in Genesis 49). He begins with praise for God as King and provider of the law, then pronounces blessings: Reuben (life), Judah (help in battle), Levi (teaching and priesthood), Benjamin (beloved), Joseph (fruitfulness and strength), Zebulun/Issachar (prosperity), Gad (expansion), Dan (lion-like), Naphtali (favor), Asher (blessed). Simeon is omitted. It ends exalting God as Israel's refuge and source of salvation.
Chapter 34: The Death of Moses
Moses ascends Mount Nebo (Pisgah), where God shows him the entire Promised Land from Gilead to the Mediterranean. God reminds him of the promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but Moses will not enter due to prior disobedience. At 120 years old, Moses dies in Moab—still vigorous and clear-eyed—according to God's word. God buries him in an unknown grave in the valley opposite Beth-peor. Israel mourns for 30 days. Joshua, filled with the spirit of wisdom, succeeds him. The chapter closes noting no prophet since has arisen like Moses, whom God knew face to face, for his signs and mighty deeds.
These chapters wrap up the Torah (Pentateuch) with themes of covenant fidelity, God's mercy amid judgment, and hope in restoration, while highlighting Moses as unparalleled yet human, pointing forward to future leadership and ultimate fulfillment.
