Here we finish building our fabric flowers and use paint to add depth to the center starburst and cranberry petals. I talk about how I decide whether or not to proceed with ideas when I am unsure.

1:42 I am working with a small area that will only hold only 3-7 bird's nests, but I still try to quilt through the batting layer.
3:00 You can stitch a little bit on trimmed elements, since they will fray off. Sometimes I start under the edge of a trimmed shape. I start and end with closed shapes by "dying" into earlier stitching or quilting a circle. I add a little outlining at the end.
4:01 Sometimes I go clockwise from petal to petal and sometimes I reverse direction so the petals will not all be the same.
4:44 Relax and trim carefully, leaving an 1/8-inch margin as you trim.
5:34 Exposed batting will need to be dealt with.
6:47 Just keep imagining what is could become...we are going for some nice variation. In the beginning, try every stitch/shape you can think of. Soon you will know what you and your machine like to do.
7:41 I add one line of stitching before I trim an area because I have a rule about not trimming single lines. MAKE YOUR OWN SET OF RULES. Don't feel that you need to adhere to mine. BUT for competitions and challenges, always follow their guidelines.

15:08 I thin my Lumiere paints by Jacquard with a little water and heat-set after a 24-hr. drying time. You can also use extenders and/or fixatives when you are doing large batches. Always wash test your paint plan. I paint three parts of the flower center and the starbursts, and it takes me about 40 minutes.
17:15 After two days of thinking about my flowers, I decide to use pictures to tryout a few options. I will change course as soon as I know I am trying an idea I don't like after all.
20:30 I mix colors a little to add more complexity and paint around the starburst. Extender increases translucence.
21:28 I outline my cranberry mini-petals with green mixed with gold. I sometimes paint along imaginary lines.
22:45 On a scrap, I test the mixed colors I want to use on the other part of the cranberry fabric.
23:41 I paint a bunch more of the cranberry fabric. At this point I often choose colors more by value or contrast than just by hue. I like playful, unexpected color combos. I like my paints, but I'm sure there are a lot of good ones out there.
24:34 Please heat set and test wash the paints you already have before buying more. In fact always test your materials and process before big important projects.
