Join me as I demonstrate how to layer and sew petals to make stuffed flowers that can be used to embellish clutches, cosmetic bags, headbands, or myriad other projects. A few simple techniques, easily mastered, lead to petals that can be gathered together by Methods I or 2. I also introduce our next fun diversion, Beautiful, Versatile, and Easy-Going: CORK!
0:00 Project Intro: You can pick up glittery holiday fabric that is sheer or use a bit of something sheer you have around the house.
1:01 LAYER: I don't really use a cutting mat to do this.
Cut 12 x 4 inch fabric layers for about 5 petals.
Cotton Underlayer - right side down
Sheer (optional) - right side down
Backing - right side up
Strip of batting - 12 x 3 - next to the backing
3:56 STITCH: Draw petals if it helps at first. Vary number of petals and relative width to length for different effects. Leave 3/8 of an inch between the petals.
5:43 TRIM & TURN Leave 1/8 or 3/16 trim margin. Make repairs right away to avoid rip out. Clip across the points.
6:31 Relieve bulk.
7:28 Insert tube between backing and sheer layer. Turn gently but firmly.
9:03 A seam gauge helps improve accuracy.
9:17 METHOD 1: STITCH & GATHER
CAUTION: Note that I do not put my fingers in the path of the needle as I sew. I also wear glasses. Press in about one and a half petals, then stitch. Use thread tail to pull first petal snugly against the last and keep stitching.
12:05 METHOD 2 OLD SCHOOL GATHERING Stitch across each petal twice with a large stitch, about 6 mm. How tight you cinch this is personal preference.
15:18 Next time I will attach this to something made of CORK, which is taking the sewing world by storm because it is beautiful, versatile, and easy-going. We will also check out basting tape.
