New York City’s hotel industry is one of the most consequential economic engines in the United States. It generates billions in tax revenue, employs tens of thousands of workers, and remains deeply embedded in the civic and economic fabric of the city.
At 1TourismWorld 2026, Vijay Dandapani, President and CEO of the Hotel Association of New York City, joins Glenn Tyranski to examine the strategic evolution of the New York City hotel industry and the structural forces shaping its future.
Vijay begins with an overview of the Hotel Association of New York City, the oldest hotel association in the United States, incorporated in the late nineteenth century. The association represents approximately 84,000 hotel rooms, including nearly every major property in the city. Pre-COVID, member hotels generated approximately $11 billion in room revenue, contributing $3.5 billion in tax dollars to New York City and an additional half billion to New York State, while employing roughly 25,000 workers.
He emphasizes that hotels are not simply commercial enterprises but civic stakeholders. During COVID, approximately 18,000 hotel rooms were voluntarily dedicated to provide safe accommodation for individuals in need. During the migrant crisis and other emergency situations, hotels again provided critical housing capacity. Members also support fire displacement relief efforts and charitable initiatives such as Citymeals on Wheels and anti-trafficking organizations.
The discussion then turns to performance metrics. Adjusted for inflation, 2025 RevPAR has finally edged above 2019 levels. However, EBITDA trends reveal continued pressure from rising labor costs, utilities, insurance, and some of the highest real estate taxes in the country. New York’s effective hotel tax burden approaches 18 percent when all fees are combined.
Vijay characterizes the current market as a “tale of two cities” or a K-shaped recovery. Luxury properties continue to perform strongly, supported by high-income travelers less sensitive to elevated rates. Meanwhile, mid-market hotels face cost pressure and pricing constraints. A Future Partners survey cited in the session found that while 75 percent of travelers view New York as highly appealing, 53 percent say it is too expensive.
A major structural constraint on supply is the 2021 zoning change requiring a special permit to build new hotels. Vijay explains how this has significantly reduced pipeline development and contributed to upward pressure on room rates. Despite this, capital continues to flow into New York, as investors view the market’s long-term fundamentals as strong.
The conversation also addresses FIFA 2026, which is expected to bring global demand to the region, though affordability remains a concern for younger travelers.
On sustainability, Vijay highlights Local Law 97, which mandates significant carbon reductions by 2030 and 2050. Hotels are working to meet these requirements while managing legacy infrastructure challenges.
Regarding artificial intelligence, he stresses that hospitality remains a human-centered industry. AI will enhance operational efficiency and service delivery, but it will not replace human interaction. Service, experience, and emotional connection remain central to New York’s hospitality proposition.
The session underscores a clear conclusion: New York City remains globally attractive and structurally resilient, yet faces policy and cost challenges that require alignment between industry and government.
